rummy gameplay guide image

Objective of the Game

Rummy is played with two decks of cards including two Jokers. The goal is to form valid sequences and sets from 13 cards by drawing and discarding cards. One pile is closed (unseen), and one is open (discard pile).

A valid declaration requires at least two sequences, one of which must be a pure sequence. Without a pure sequence, a player cannot win.

Card Values

Cards rank from Ace to King. Ace, Jack, Queen, and King are worth 10 points each. Number cards carry their face value (e.g., 5 = 5 points).

1. Sequences

Pure Sequence

A sequence of 3+ consecutive cards of the same suit, without using any Joker.

  • Example: 5♥ 6♥ 7♥
  • Example: 3♠ 4♠ 5♠ 6♠

Impure Sequence

A sequence that uses a Joker as a replacement.

  • 6♦ 7♦ Q♠ 9♦ (Q♠ as Joker replacing 8♦)
  • 5♠ Q♥ 7♠ 8♠ PJ (Q♥ as wild Joker for 6♠, PJ as 9♠)

2. Sets

A group of 3+ cards of the same value but different suits. Jokers can be used.

  • A♥ A♣ A♦
  • 8♦ 8♣ 8♠ 8♥
  • 9♦ Q♠ 9♠ 9♥ (Q♠ as Joker for 9♣)

Invalid Set Example: Q♥ Q♥ Q♦ (duplicate suit); 7♠ 7♥ 7♦ 7♠ (duplicate suit)
